The backside of the Tongariro Crossing is a long downhill walk. If
it's cold at the top, you're almost certain to be warm by the time you get back
down. From the stark volcanic peak, you gradually return to thick, lush greenery.

About two hours from the end of the trek, there's a hut used by hikers to
cook food, warm-up, or rest before going on. The scenery here is dramatically
different from that on the other side of the peaks.
