Photos from the Tongariro Crossing

The backside of the Tongariro Crossing is a long downhill walk. If it's cold at the top, you're almost certain to be warm by the time you get back down. From the stark volcanic peak, you gradually return to thick, lush greenery.

Red crater is in the foreground.
Another view of the windy, snowy peaks.
About two hours from the end of the trek, there's a hut used by hikers to cook food, warm-up, or rest before going on. The scenery here is dramatically different from that on the other side of the peaks.
