Lake Taupo is a beautiful, clear, turquoise colored lake situated near
the middle of the north island of New Zealand. There are quite a few interesting
things to see around this area.
Taupo has a scenic setting, looking out over the lake with the mountains of
Tongariro in the distance.
If you take a boat out onto the lake, you can see these interesting Maori
rock carvings.
These were carved into the stone in the 1920's.
Next to the face, there are carvings of reptiles and Maori figures in the
rocks.
