We were surrounded by ice, but the day was warm enough for short sleeves. We relied upon crampons and pickaxes to help keep our footing. But our guide led the way, sometimes using his ice axe to cut steps.
The guides used their ice axes to level a landing spot for the chopper.
Our guide led the way along deep crevasses. Some of these were quite deep, but often, we couldn't see the bottom because the walls seem to curve back under the ice.
The blueness of the ice on Franz Josef glacier was really spectacular.
