The town at the base of the Franz Josef glacier is a comfortable little
place. There are a few nice outdoor cafes and restaurants. This is a popular
destination in New Zealand, so expect to pay a little bit more for accomodations
here.
Sizes and distances here are so deceiving, it seems that the chopper is
going to take off right into the face of the glacier.

There are many nice dayhikes in the Franz Josef area also. This spot is known
as Peter's Pool.
